50th Anniversary
2012 was the club's 50th Anniversary and a fantastic dinner was held in celebration of this milestone.
Future Bright for Football
After conceding only one goal all tournament, Nelson Suburbs U-19's shook up the entire South Island club championship in Christchurch, dispatching every team with ease on route to a 2-0 victory over Western in the final. "We shouldn't have even conceded that goal. The ball was out, it bounced over the line and Darrell Hannah picked it up, and they got a free kick cause he handled the ball, and they scored off that free kick," says coach Brendan Crichton.
The statistics were one for the record books as goalkeeper Coey Turipa kept five clean sheets and scored a goal himself from a penalty. "Coey asked me, but he was already halfway up the field when he asked. I just said 'yup, go for it,' it put a smile on his face". While it is rare for a keeper to score, it is not often that a keeper scores the same amount of goals as he concedes in a tournament.
Coey was barely tested in the competition, but says he enjoyed scoring. "I did a bit of a celebration, a forward roll. I made one amazing save against Hornby who we beat 12-nil, so that would've been pretty embarrassing to let that one in."
Billy Scott captained the side in the absence of Suburbs young player of the year, Adam Smith, who filled one of the guest spots for Tawa at the Napier City Rovers U-19 Youth Championship. "Billy brings a big physical presence there, he held the midfield together really well."
While Brendan had praise for everyone in the team, the defense in particular, he was impressed by the two College-Metro guest players, and two Suburbs youngsters. "I thought Adam Leckey and Jono Drew were very good, Jono especially. I hadn't much to do with him before, but he did well. Even the young guys like Cory Brown and Fox Slotemaker contributed really well. I think the future is quite promising, arguably we've got the best young players in New Zealand."
