Junior & Youth Football

  • Grading: A player is 8th grade (for example) if they turn 8 years old during the current calendar year - see below for further details as to what grade a player may be placed in this season.
  • Girls or boys teams: We use the mixed pathway for First Kicks and Fun Football.  After that, girls can choose whether they want to be in a mixed team (in a mixed grade) or in a girls only team.  Where possible, we play girls only teams in a girls only grade, but from time-to-time we may place a girls team in a mixed grade if abilities allow.  Boys always play in a mixed grade.
  • Fees vary per grade - see our Fees & Registration page for more information about fees and how to pay/register.
  • Queries should please go to Sandy Hamson at info@nelsonsuburbs.co.nz and she'll point you in the right direction.  Once the season is underway, queries should go to the coach in the first instance.

First Kicks Football

Our First Kicks program is for the very beginner at the youngest age: 4 - 6 years of age.

The emphasis is on delivering a fun session with small skill based drills and small sided games.  Children develop skills through contact with one ball each and lots of touches on the ball.

Sessions are held at Saxton Field cricket oval from 9:15am - 10am.  The season will run throughout term 2 and 3 with a break during the holidays.  See our Fees & Registration page for more information about fees and how to pay/register.  We will post more information about the season start as it draws nearer.

Can you help?  These sessions can't run without the help of parents.  If you are able to help run activities through the hour-long session please contact info@nelsonsuburbs.co.nz.  No experience is necessary, just a willingness to help.

Fun Football

Our Fun Football program caters for 7 - 8 year olds (7th & 8th grades).

Fun Football is the next step up from First Kicks - these sessions are held from 10am at Saxton Fields cricket oval on Saturday mornings through terms 2-3.  See our Fees & Registration page for more information about fees and how to pay/register.  We will post more information about the season start as it draws nearer.

What is Fun Football?
  • Small sided games of 3-5 players
  • Small football pitches of 20m x 30m with popup goals and no goalkeepers
  • Games are 15 minutes long and each team plays two games with a size 3 ball
  • No parents are to be in the playing area unless they are coaching.  The area gets very congested, so we ask that all players come prepared with a water bottle and anything else they may need.
Weekly draws are published here - please use the drop down box on the top right of the page to select the date you are wanting to view.

The field map for the games is published here.
